Asher Perez
(they/he)
Asher Perez is an emerging multidisciplinary artist who uses their practice to address socio-political issues. Drawing from their background as a queer Filipino-American and experience as a community organizer, they aim to represent underserved communities. Their practice evokes curiosity into contemporary issues that greatly impact Philippine society both here and abroad including the exploitation of the working class, erasure of history and culture, and the global devastation of American imperialism.
Perez’s work references recognizable imagery inspired by Filipino culture and society that establish a feeling of relatability and emotional connection with the broad masses of the working class. In both printmaking and painting, they utilize illustrative form and vivid color that make these immediate, pressing issues impossible to ignore in the name of liberation.
After creating art for their whole life, Perez earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from California State University-Long Beach. They work as part of the Filipino Artists Kollective, an organization of artists working towards social change. They now reside in Covina, CA where they continue to empower their community through their organizing efforts and creative vision.
