On December 16th, we remember the art, passion, and diligence of Jose Maria Sison (1939-2022). His poems and writings recount not just the struggles of the people but also the optimistic solutions of the movement. Now more than ever, we must internalize the lessons inscribed within Sison’s stanzas and lines. During this politcally dense time of systemic corruption in our goverments, intensifying attacks on migrants, and the continued militarization of our homelands; it is important to note that we are a part of a much larger battle and it is of the utmost importance that we continue to fight.
Sison’s poem of the same name describes “the monster on the land” that has imposed itself upon the people wielding a sword and cross. This is a monster born of centuries of oppression, one that has taken the land from the people and shamed us for our cultures and traditions. This is a monster whose roots run deep–too deep–in our history. However, no matter how ancient this monster is, the unity and continue efforts of the people will stand against it until we are free. While perhaps the monster will not be slain today or tomorrow or the next day, we must remain diligent in our fight to pave the way for the next generations who will be able to land the final blow.
Even in 1978, Sison remained steadfast in this revolutionary optimism that that this ancient monster would come to an end. Sison’s works continue to inspire generations of the movement, and in the same way, the work we do now in our lifetime will fuel the fire of those who come after us. Join the movement and keep fighting. Imperyalismo Ibagsak! Isang Bagsak!
