Viewer Profile

Karen Galloway is the owner and art director of Sow and Tailor in Los Angeles. Her gallery works with emerging, mid-career, and established artists of all mediums whose work focuses on diverse cultural themes. The exhibits currently on display include works related to fluctuating female beauty standards and the intersectional Chicano experience. Many of the featured works are innovative, vibrant, and playful. Ultimately, her gallery promotes authentic stories of marginalized identities and awareness of social issues.

Karen was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She went to art school at Columbia College in Chicago, but returned to Los Angeles during the pandemic to open Sow and Tailor. She initially opened the gallery to immerse her children in the art that she remembered growing up around. She has always been an appreciator of the arts, including fashion and theatre.

Websites in my Field

  1. https://www.eliseoartsilva.com/
    1. I think this website does a good job at clearly displaying the breadth of Eliseo’s work, but I think it would be more effective if the work was organized by theme or medium rather than chronologically. I also think that there are too many fonts, which makes the site feel a bit chaotic.
  2. https://www.silverlensgalleries.com/artists/pow-martinez
    1. This website feels clean and is easy to navigate. Websites don’t have to be overly designed or eye-catching themselves. In this case, the simplicity helps the colorful, more whimsical art speak for itself.
  3. https://www.wannabeprojects.com/
    1. This website has a nice color scheme that helps differentiate it without overwhelming visitors. Color can be a good way to reinforce a brand or style without getting too fancy. However, the site as a whole is not very populated, and the “home” and “catalog” pages are virtually the same, which made navigating the site a bit confusing.
  4. https://www.perrypicasshoe.com/
    1. I really love how this website highlights the art itself. The simple red and white theme lends itself to the sensual and intense artwork, and the large thumbnails allow the work to fill the screen. There are photos of the work on display in galleries, which I think grounds the artwork in reality. It also uses short clips and slight zoom-ins when you interact with images, which makes the website feel more alive and somewhat exciting to navigate. A critique I have is that there is a pop up for a newsletter that makes the site a bit busy and feel slightly commercialized.
  5. https://www.lenorelim.com/selected-work
    1. I like how the background is a translucent image of an artwork. I think it immerses audiences into the artist’s world. However, I think it would have been more effective to display the work in a gallery layout rather than a carousel. Carousels make it more difficult to view the body of work as a whole.
